Hiking | Biking Shirley Chrisholm State Park
On July 2, 2019 Brooklyn officially opened Shirley Chisholm State Park, New York City’s largest state park and the third-largest park in Brooklyn behind Marine and Prospect. Located on the site of the former Pennsylvania Avenue and Fountain Avenue landfills the 407 acre green space includes 10 miles (16 km) of bike paths and hiking trails, a kayak launch point and a pier for fishing at the head of Pennsylvania Avenue.
The trails in this Brooklyn oasis are quiet(away from traffic noise), green and graveled which makes for some fun down hill riding along well marked paths. Because of the size of the park we think the best way to see it is on two wheels but if you don’t have your own bike don’t worry. One of our favorite finds was the "bike library" located inside the park, which allows park users to borrow refurbished bikes for free! All you need to rent a bike is an ID and signed waiver and you have your self a mountain bike to explore with for up to an hour.
Entry is free and the park is open everyday from 9a-6p
The park offers:
10 miles of biking and hiking trails – please stay on the trails!
SCSP Bike Library with loaner bikes for park patrons of all ages
Gorgeous waterfront access on Penn Pier, Hendrix Creek Patio
Picnicking
Environmental Education including fishing, guided bird walks and nature in your neighborhood
Please help them take care of this wonderful park and respect the rules:
Please place all trash and recycling in the proper containers
Please, no smoking!
Please, no grilling or fires!
Please leave your dogs and pets at home
Please keep wildlife wild, do not feed the birds or water fowl
Fun Fact: The park is named after Shirley Chisholm, who represented the area as the first black U.S. congresswoman, and later became the first black female to seek a major-party nomination for U.S. president.
