6 Actions to Celebrate Earth Day (everyday)

Brooklyn Base Camp was created to bridge the gap between urban adventure enthusiasts and NYC’s amazing network of outdoor pursuits. A lot of these pursuits take place in public parks, water ways and green spaces around the city. It’s our responsibility to ensure these spaces are healthy, clean and protected for everyone to enjoy. We strongly feel our environment needs to be put first and it’s time for NYC to stand up and lead the way.

Here are 6 actions you can take to celebrate the Earth (everyday):

Sign the Petition

We’re reaching out to Mayor de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo and petitioning that Earth Day be named a national holiday. Mother Earth needs your help. Sign the petition!

Participate in a cleanup

Earth Day Network's website has a tool for looking up cleanups in NYC

Buy a reusable bag

Single-use plastic bags are harmful to the environment, posing threat to marine wildlife.

Use a reusable water bottle

Owning a reusable bottle saves from plastics entering landfills and producing more waste! Plus it saves you a ton of money.

Walk or ride your bike

Reduce your carbon footprint and opt into taking a long walk to work, or better yet, pump some air into your bike tires and take a ride.

Shop and eat local

Buying local reduces the environmental impact of products by reducing the distance they have to travel to reach your plate and providing you with more nutritional value. And amongst a long list of benefits, it also supports local businesses and fosters a community that we can all connect with.

Leave No Trace

The Seven Principles of Leave No Trace were developed to help educate and guide recreationists in sustainable minimum impact practices that mitigate or avoid recreation-related impacts.” Although Leave No Trace has its roots in backcountry and wilderness, the practices have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere - from the backcountry, to local parks, to your backyard - and for any recreational activity.
